Referencing is a central aspect of academic writing, which many would prefer to disregard. Good referencing demonstrates rigorous research and shows respect for the work of others by acknowledging sources. It places the writer in a community of thinkers and gives credibility to one’s claims.
Poor research not only makes for unconvincing writing but can lead to accusations of academic misconduct and plagiarism that can lead to serious consequences, even if it is unintentional.
This 1-hour workshop will assist students in developing the necessary referencing skills to demonstrate academic integrity and help avoid losing marks, or worse, for failing to reference correctly. Students will learn when and how to reference and will have the chance to ask questions and to put their skills into practice.
Please bring along a copy of a reference guide for your discipline’s preferred style, which should be accessible through your university’s library, as well as a draft copy of your own work to refer to.
